Twenty of the most common aircond problems — not cooling, water leaking, strange noises, bad smells, tripped power and error lights — explained with their likely causes, the checks you can safely do yourself, and what a KL Renovator technician fixes on-site, with the price confirmed before work starts.
Cooling Problems
Low gas, dirty coil or a failing capacitor — the usual suspects.
Warm air and longer cooling cycles point to low refrigerant.
Ice on the coil — low gas or a blocked airflow path.
Dirty filters and a clogged blower are the first things to check.
Water & Odour
A blocked drain pipe is behind most indoor-unit leaks.
Drips from the front panel usually mean a dirty drain pan.
Constant dripping is a drainage problem, not a cooling one.
Mould and biofilm on a wet coil — a chemical wash resolves it.
Electrical & Mechanical
Remote, power supply or PCB — traced in order of likelihood.
A failing capacitor or PCB is the usual trip cause.
Grinding or rattling points to bearings, blades or a loose part.
Runs but won't cool — honest repair-vs-replace advice.

Start with the DIY checks every guide includes — cleaning the filter, checking the remote battery, confirming the circuit breaker. These solve a surprising share of 'broken' aircond calls, and they cost nothing. Anything involving the sealed refrigerant circuit, mains electricity or dismantled parts is technician work.
Every problem guide lists the likely causes in order of frequency, plus the published price for the fix. KL Renovator charges an RM 88 diagnostic fee that is waived when you approve the repair — you never pay for a guess.
A clogged filter that slows cooling, a remote with dead batteries, a tripped breaker, and a unit that simply needs a power reset. Anything with refrigerant gas, mains wiring, the compressor or water leaking from the indoor unit is safer left to a licensed technician — the guides below show what each fix costs.

The diagnostic fee is RM 88. It is waived in full when you approve a repair with us, so you only pay for the fix. If you decide not to proceed, the RM 88 covers the technician's time and the report of what is wrong.
If it is still blowing cool air, yes — but expect a higher electricity bill while it runs inefficiently. If you see ice forming, smell burning, or the unit trips the breaker, switch it off and call a technician; continued running can damage the compressor.
Filter clogs, remote batteries and a tripped circuit breaker are safe, free checks. Opening the electrical panel, handling refrigerant or dismantling the indoor unit is not DIY — those are technician jobs covered in the guides below.
Same-day service is available for bookings confirmed before 11 AM across our 39 areas in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor. Emergency slots for complete breakdowns or heavy leaks are prioritised.
Musty smell comes from mould and bacteria growing on the wet evaporator coil and blower wheel. A pressure chemical wash dissolves the biofilm and rinses it out through the drain — for very heavy build-up, a chemical overhaul at RM 420 is the complete fix.

Definitions
Short, plain-language definitions of the terms used above — written by the technicians who do the work, not copied from a manufacturer brochure.
The compressor sits in the outdoor unit and pumps refrigerant around the loop, raising its pressure so it can dump heat outside. It is the single most expensive component in the system. Most compressor failures are secondary — caused by running low on gas, a failed capacitor, a choked condenser coil or long-term voltage stress rather than by the compressor itself wearing out.
Compressor replacement is quoted from RM 800 – 2,000 — on a unit past 8 years old, compare that against a new install before approving it.
The capacitor is a small cylinder in the outdoor unit that gives the compressor and fan motor the starting kick they need. Heat ages it faster than any other part, so it is the most common single failure in Malaysian conditions. Typical symptoms: the outdoor fan hums but will not spin, the unit trips the breaker on start, or cooling works only intermittently.
A capacitor swap is quoted from RM 150 – 250 and takes minutes — always rule it out before anyone quotes you a compressor.
Refrigerant is the working fluid that carries heat out of your room. Malaysian homes run three types: R22 in older non-inverter units, R410A in mid-generation inverters and R32 in most units sold today. They operate at different pressures and use different compressor oils, so they can never be mixed or substituted — doing so damages the compressor and voids any warranty.
Photograph the outdoor unit nameplate before you book — it tells the technician the gas type and charge weight, and stops a wrong-gas quote.
Side-by-side comparison
Use age, the part that failed and the repair-to-replacement ratio — not how the unit looks.
| What to compare | Repair the existing unit | Replace with a new unit |
|---|---|---|
| Unit age | Under 7 years | Over 10 years, or R22 |
| Failed part | Capacitor, sensor, fan motor, drain pump | Compressor or corroded coil |
| Cost signal | Repair under about half a new install | Repair approaching a new install |
| Electricity | Unchanged | Modern inverter cuts long-run consumption |
In short: Get a diagnostic first (RM 88) so the decision rests on a measured fault instead of a guess — the fee is trivial next to a wrong replacement.
