A 1 HP (Horsepower) aircond is typically suitable for cooling a room size of 100 to 150 square feet. This is ideal for standard bedrooms or study rooms in Malaysia.
A 1.5 HP aircond is perfect for rooms ranging from 150 to 250 square feet. It is commonly used for larger master bedrooms, small living rooms, or home offices.
The basic formula is Room Length (ft) × Room Width (ft) × 25 BTU. You can adjust this by multiplying for room type (bedrooms need less cooling, kitchens need more), sun exposure (west-facing or top floors need extra BTU), and number of occupants.

BTU per hour measures how much heat a unit removes from a room in an hour. A 1.0 HP wall unit is roughly 9,000 BTU/h and a 1.5 HP is roughly 12,000 BTU/h. Room area sets the baseline, then you add capacity for west-facing windows, a top-floor ceiling, high occupancy or kitchen heat.
Oversizing is a real mistake: an over-large unit hits temperature fast, short-cycles, and leaves the room cold but damp.
HP is the informal Malaysian shorthand for cooling capacity, carried over from compressor horsepower. In practice 1.0 HP ≈ 9,000 BTU/h, 1.5 HP ≈ 12,000 BTU/h, 2.0 HP ≈ 18,000 BTU/h and 2.5 HP ≈ 24,000 BTU/h. Service, chemical wash and installation prices are all quoted against these bands, which is why the technician asks for HP before quoting.
HP is printed on the indoor unit's side label and on the outdoor nameplate — check there rather than guessing from room size.
A ceiling cassette is recessed into the ceiling and blows air out of two or four sides, which suits square shoplots, meeting rooms and open-plan offices better than a wall unit. Servicing it is a different job: the technician works overhead off a ladder, drops the face panel, and often has to deal with a condensate pump rather than a gravity drain.
Cassette work is priced separately from wall units — chemical wash for a 1.0–1.5 HP cassette starts at RM 220.
