New Aircond Not Cold? First-Month Guide
New aircond in KL not cold in the first month? Settings, vacuum, HP size and published diagnosis from RM 88 — before you blame the brand.

A new split that is not cold in week one is almost never “dirty.” The coil has not had time to foul. The first 30 days are about commissioning, settings and size — the same faults listed in our installation-mistakes guide, caught early.
First-month decision table
| What you see | Likely cause | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Indoor fan only, outdoor silent | Isolator, comms, capacitor | Diagnosis RM 88 |
| Runs, air not colder after 10 minutes | Valves still closed, no vacuum, leak, wrong HP | Do not keep running; call the installer or us |
| Ice on new pipe | Restriction or leak | Switch off; diagnosis |
| Cools one room, not the hall | HP / placement, not the brand | BTU calculator |
| Works at night, weak at 3pm | West sun + undersize | Size check, not a chemical wash |
Any-age “not cold” causes live in why aircond is not cold. This page stays on units that have not seen a Malaysian year yet.
If KL Renovator installed it
Eligible workmanship is covered for 1 month. WhatsApp the job date and a 20-second video of the indoor airflow and outdoor unit. If someone else installed it, we still diagnose and quote — vacuuming a line-set we did not join is a repair, not a warranty claim on their work.

Frequently asked questions
Why is my brand-new aircond not cold?
In the first 30 days the usual causes are settings (fan-only, timer, high set point), a skipped vacuum on a cheap install, undersized HP, a flare leak, or an outdoor unit that cannot reject heat. Dirt is unlikely on a new coil.
How long should a new unit take to feel cold?
A correctly commissioned wall-mounted split should blow clearly colder air within a few minutes. If it is still room-temperature after ten minutes, it is not “still settling.”
The installer said it needs time to “break in.”
Compressors do not need a week to learn how to cool. A new set that never went cold was not finished — vacuum, valves, pipe size or electrical. Ask for the commissioning sheet.
Does KL Renovator’s 1-month warranty cover “not cold”?
Eligible KL Renovator installation workmanship is covered for 1 month. Pre-existing faults on a customer-supplied unit, or work we did not install, are diagnosed at RM 88 (waived with repair) and quoted separately.
Could the HP be wrong?
Yes. A 1.0 HP unit in a west-facing 200 sq ft hall will run all day and still feel weak. Check the BTU calculator against the room, not the brochure photo.
There is ice on the new copper pipe.
Ice in month one is a restriction or a leak, not “extra cold.” Switch off and book diagnosis. Do not keep running it.
The remote works but the outdoor unit is silent.
Indoor fan alone is not cooling. Check the isolator, then book a visit — capacitor, comms cable or a board. See the outdoor unit not running page.
Should I add gas to a new aircond?
Not as a first move. A new split is charged at the factory. Top-up without a leak check just hides a flare or a kink. R32/R410A is RM 3.00/PSI after inspection if a top-up is actually required.
Who should I call — the shop or a technician?
If we installed it, WhatsApp us with the job date. If another contractor installed it, we can still diagnose (RM 88) and quote the fix. We do not void a brand warranty by opening a sealed compressor on a unit still under factory cover without telling you first.
How fast can you come in the first month?
Hours are Monday–Sunday 9:00 AM–6:00 PM. Same-day slots depend on routing across KL and Selangor.
Definitions
Key terms in this guide, explained
Short, plain-language definitions of the terms used above — written by the technicians who do the work, not copied from a manufacturer brochure.
What is an aircond isolator and MCB?
The isolator is the local switch that cuts power to one aircond so a technician can work on it safely; the MCB is the circuit breaker in the distribution board that protects that circuit against overload and short circuit. Each unit should sit on a correctly rated circuit — sharing a lighting circuit or running off an extension lead is both a nuisance-trip and a fire risk.
Repeated tripping is a wiring or capacity problem to investigate, never something to fix by resetting the breaker harder.
Capacitor — what is it doing at start-up?
The capacitor is a small cylinder in the outdoor unit that gives the compressor and fan motor the starting kick they need. Heat ages it faster than any other part, so it is the most common single failure in Malaysian conditions. Typical symptoms: the outdoor fan hums but will not spin, the unit trips the breaker on start, or cooling works only intermittently.
A capacitor swap is quoted from RM 150 – 250 and takes minutes — always rule it out before anyone quotes you a compressor.
Chemical wash — what is actually done to the unit?
A pressure chemical wash is a deep clean done with the indoor unit still on the wall. The technician sheets the wall and floor, sprays a coil-safe chemical onto the evaporator fins and blower wheel, then flushes everything out with a pressurised water jet into a catch bag. It removes the mould film and dust mat that ordinary filter washing cannot reach. Published price starts at RM 120 for a 1.0–1.5 HP wall unit.
Most Klang Valley homes need one every 10–12 months; every 6 months if the unit runs overnight or the room faces a construction site.
Side-by-side comparison
Repair vs replace: which decision costs less over three years?
Use age, the part that failed and the repair-to-replacement ratio — not how the unit looks.
| What to compare | Repair the existing unit | Replace with a new unit |
|---|---|---|
| Unit age | Under 7 years | Over 10 years, or R22 |
| Failed part | Capacitor, sensor, fan motor, drain pump | Compressor or corroded coil |
| Cost signal | Repair under about half a new install | Repair approaching a new install |
| Electricity | Unchanged | Modern inverter cuts long-run consumption |
In short: Get a diagnostic first (RM 88) so the decision rests on a measured fault instead of a guess — the fee is trivial next to a wrong replacement.
