Why Electrical Requirements Matter for Aircond

Aircond units are among the highest-draw appliances in your home. Incorrect electrical work doesn't just cause poor performance — it creates fire risks, voids your manufacturer warranty, and may invalidate your home insurance. MCB (Circuit Breaker) Sizing by HP

Type C MCB is recommended for aircond because it tolerates the brief startup surge without nuisance tripping.

Dedicated Circuit: When Is It Required?

• 2.0 HP and above: Mandatory dedicated circuit — cannot share with lights or sockets
• 1.0-1.5 HP: Recommended dedicated circuit, but can share if total circuit load is under 80% of MCB rating
• Multiple units: Each unit should have its own dedicated MCB, even if fed from the same distribution board

Earthing (Grounding) Requirements

Every aircond installation must have proper earthing:

• Earth wire (green/yellow) connected from DB box to indoor and outdoor units
• Earth resistance must be below 10 ohms (measured with earth tester)
• Never use water pipes as earth — this is dangerous and illegal
• RCD (Residual Current Device) protection recommended for all aircond circuits

Common Electrical Mistakes We Fix

• ⚠️ Sharing 13A socket with aircond — overload risk, frequent tripping
• ⚠️ Using extension cords — voltage drop, overheating, fire risk
• ⚠️ Undersized MCB — nuisance tripping every time compressor starts
• ⚠️ Oversized MCB — won't trip during actual fault, wire can overheat and burn
• ⚠️ No earth connection — electric shock risk, especially on outdoor unit
• ⚠️ Aluminium wiring — found in some pre-1990s homes, must be replaced with copper

Isolator Switch — Do You Need One?

An outdoor isolator switch (also called a "disconnector") is:

• Required by regulation for all permanently connected aircond units
• Located near the outdoor unit for safe maintenance isolation
• Allows technician to safely disconnect power without going to the DB box
• Cost: RM 30-50 installed — always included in our installations
