Choosing the Right HP for Your Room
- 1.0 HP: Up to 100 sq ft
- 1.5 HP: 100–200 sq ft (most common)
- 2.0 HP: 200–300 sq ft
- 2.5 HP: 300–400 sq ft
- 3.0 HP: 400–600 sq ft
Always round up if near the top of a range. West-facing rooms need higher HP.
Electrical Point
Every aircond needs a dedicated 15A electrical point. KL Renovator installs one for RM 100 if none exists.

Common Installation Mistakes to Avoid
Poor installation causes problems that persist for the entire life of the unit. The most common mistakes from unqualified installers include: not vacuuming the refrigerant lines before charging (air and moisture in the system degrade compressor performance), undersizing copper pipe (causes higher operating pressure and reduced efficiency), installing the indoor unit without adequate drainage fall (water backs up and leaks), and mounting the outdoor unit in a position with insufficient clearance for heat rejection. After Installation — First 30 Days
In the first 30 days after installation, monitor the unit for: water dripping from the indoor unit (indicates a drainage slope issue), unusual noise during compressor startup (may indicate a refrigerant charge issue), cooling performance that does not match the expected output for the HP size, or any smell from the unit beyond the typical "new unit" smell. Electrical Point Requirements
Every aircond requires a dedicated 15-amp electrical point — it cannot share a socket with other appliances. If your room does not have a dedicated aircond point, KL Renovator can install one as part of the installation visit for RM 100 additional. For units 3.0 HP and above, a 20-amp dedicated circuit is recommended to handle the higher compressor startup current. The electrical point must be within 2–3 metres of the indoor unit location for standard installation. Units requiring longer cable runs will be quoted accordingly before work begins.

Outdoor condenser — what is it rejecting, and what blocks it?
The outdoor unit holds the compressor, the condenser coil and the fan that blows heat away from the coil. It can only reject heat if air moves freely through the fins, so a coil packed with dust, a unit boxed into a tight service yard, or a hot wall right behind it all raise running pressure and electricity use.
Leave at least 30 cm of clear air behind the condenser and never enclose it in a sealed cabinet or grille box.
What is the compressor's job in the system?
The compressor sits in the outdoor unit and pumps refrigerant around the loop, raising its pressure so it can dump heat outside. It is the single most expensive component in the system. Most compressor failures are secondary — caused by running low on gas, a failed capacitor, a choked condenser coil or long-term voltage stress rather than by the compressor itself wearing out.
Compressor replacement is quoted from RM 800 – 2,000 — on a unit past 8 years old, compare that against a new install before approving it.
What does HP mean on an aircond?
HP is the informal Malaysian shorthand for cooling capacity, carried over from compressor horsepower. In practice 1.0 HP ≈ 9,000 BTU/h, 1.5 HP ≈ 12,000 BTU/h, 2.0 HP ≈ 18,000 BTU/h and 2.5 HP ≈ 24,000 BTU/h. Service, chemical wash and installation prices are all quoted against these bands, which is why the technician asks for HP before quoting.
HP is printed on the indoor unit's side label and on the outdoor nameplate — check there rather than guessing from room size.
