R32 vs R410A vs R22: Malaysian Aircond Gas Types and Pressure Guide
Confused by R32, R410A and R22? Learn which gas your aircond uses, why pressures differ and why mixing refrigerants is dangerous.

R32, R410A and R22 use different pressures and oils. Mixing refrigerants or charging to the wrong PSI can damage the compressor and reduce cooling efficiency.
This guide is prepared by KL Renovator's HVAC Expert Team for Malaysian homeowners, condo residents, offices and shoplots looking for a trusted aircond technician near me across KL and Selangor.
What is R32 gas?
R32 is common in newer inverter systems. It offers strong cooling efficiency and lower environmental impact compared with older refrigerants.
What is R410A gas?
R410A is a higher-pressure blended refrigerant used in many mid-generation inverter units. It requires proper gauges and compatible equipment.
Gas type comparison
| Item | Price / Detail | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| R32 | Approx 130–150 PSI | Modern inverter units |
| R410A | Approx 120–140 PSI | Mid-generation inverter units |
| R22 | Approx 60–70 PSI | Older non-inverter units |
What is R22 gas?
R22 is an older refrigerant used by many legacy non-inverter units. It is phased out for new equipment but still exists in older properties.
Can different gases be mixed?
No. Different refrigerants operate at different pressures and use different oil compatibility. Mixing can damage the compressor.
How do I know my gas type?

Definitions
Key terms in this guide, explained
Short, plain-language definitions of the terms used above — written by the technicians who do the work, not copied from a manufacturer brochure.
What is the difference an inverter makes overnight?
An inverter aircond varies compressor speed instead of switching it fully on and off. Once the room reaches the set temperature the compressor slows to a trickle rather than stopping, which holds the temperature steadier and avoids the heavy current spike of every restart. That is where the electricity saving comes from — it is a control difference, not a stronger cooling capacity.
Inverter savings only show up on units that run for hours at a time. A living-room unit switched on for 45 minutes will not pay back the price difference.
Outdoor condenser — what is it rejecting, and what blocks it?
The outdoor unit holds the compressor, the condenser coil and the fan that blows heat away from the coil. It can only reject heat if air moves freely through the fins, so a coil packed with dust, a unit boxed into a tight service yard, or a hot wall right behind it all raise running pressure and electricity use.
Leave at least 30 cm of clear air behind the condenser and never enclose it in a sealed cabinet or grille box.
Aircond gas top-up — what is being measured?
A gas top-up restores refrigerant pressure in a system that has lost charge. The technician reads the outdoor unit sticker for the gas type, connects a manifold gauge, checks static and running pressure, then charges by PSI to the manufacturer's target. Refrigerant sits in a sealed loop, so a system that needs topping up has a leak somewhere — the charge is a symptom, not the cure. R32 is priced at RM 3.00 / PSI.
If the same unit needs gas twice in a year, pay for leak detection and repair (RM 120 / leak) instead of a third top-up.
Side-by-side comparison
R32 vs R410A: what changes for servicing and cost?
You do not choose the refrigerant — the unit does. What matters is knowing which one you have before anyone opens a valve.
| What to compare | R32 | R410A |
|---|---|---|
| Found in | Most units sold in Malaysia today | Mid-generation inverters, roughly 2010–2018 |
| Composition | Single component — can be topped up | Blend — a big leak is better recovered and recharged |
| Global warming potential | About a third of R410A | Higher |
| Published top-up price | RM 3.00 / PSI | RM 3.00 / PSI |
In short: Never let anyone substitute one for the other in an existing system; retrofitting the wrong gas costs a compressor, not a top-up.
